Next time you are torn between genres to settle down with a movie, try streaming Netflix Emilia Pérez.
Within two hours or so, there is almost all of it: a neo-noir thriller, controversial story of salvation, engrossing human studies, even dramatic comedy starring jugglers, and last but not least, an all-out musical.
What’s else worth mentioning about another Spanish-language Oscar nominee that truly stands out on Netflix? Taller than that group of actors, one would be very hard pressed to find that caliber women around, who as elements of the otherwise over-the-top singing and dancing performance that Jacques Audiard’s film is, at least keep grounded most of the time.
About Netflix Emilia Pérez
Right from the opening credits of Emilia Pérez, a film by Jacques Audiard (Dheepan, Rust and Bone, The Sisters Brothers), the audience is told that this will be a musical.
In Emilia Pérez Jacques Audiard’s innovative romance musical meets crime noir. The picture which also features Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez and Karla Sofía Gascón follows the evolution of a vicious drug lord to female.
A purposeful and out of the box film, Emilia Pérez is a strikingly beautiful and passionate tale about identity, love and forgiveness through strange day to day stories and use of music.
The creative tensions of the performances, the great songs, and other familiar tropes present in “Emilia Pérez” have contributed to create something creatively engaging and never remotely boring.

Netflix’s official synopsis reads as follows:
“Against the trend of a conventional narrative emerges Emilia Pérez, a creation of original filmmaker Jacques Audiard. Emi, is an over-the-top visual adventure, which is the correct term, given that it incorporates uplifting music and dances, the story tells of four unique women travelers based in Mexico, embarking on the quest of their lives, in search of happiness. Leads ‘cartel una’ Emilia a.k.a ‘La Dama de Acero’ (Karla Sofía Gascón) persuades an under-utilized lawyer in a dead-end job called Rita (Zoe Saldaña) to assist her in plotting an elaborate ruse about her death, so Emilia can live her life as herself without fear.”
It is perfectly fine, if a film does not connect with every person present. Let’s put it very plainly, not everyone is crazy about musicals, and to put it mildly, Emilia Pérez, is a musical.
However, if Emilia Pérez is the kind of movie you are willing to pay attention to, then the story of the film and more so the three actresses who played the main roles and finished first in the Best Actress category at the Cannes Film Festival are stunning in a way.
It is a challenging kind of musical which asks a bit more from the viewer than a standard picture on Netflix, but that is what contributes to the excitement and engagement.
Fans of the singer-actress Selena Gomez probably weren’t expecting this kind of movie from her, but it’s still worth watching just to see the artist who has been credited with impressive accolades trying to land her first Academy Award.
In short, you have to watch this movie if you like any of the actors, the director, or movies in general.
