Are you excited for one of the most memorable villain origin stories to hit the screens? In officially announced news, Wicked: the movie is almost upon us.
The Tony-winning musical is based on Gregory Maguire’s Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, a 1995 book of fiction that will arrive in theaters in time for Christmas.
It is a sequel to The Wizard of Oz. Under Universal, there are two major movie picture adaptations of Wicked, and increasingly concrete details about the projects are coming into the open.
About the Movie
In 2003, Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel played the original roles of Glinda and Elphaba in the Broadway production of Wicked. The backwards story of the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West is told long before Dorothy even enters the enchanted land of Oz.
The prequel focuses on the bond shared by two ambitious young witches, who start off as friends but end up as foes–changing the course of their own lives and that of Oz forever.
The next films in the series – to be directed by Jon M. Chu of Crazy Rich Asians and In the Heights fame – will see Tony Award Winner Cynthia Erivo fill the role of Elphaba, while mega pop star Ariana Grande will star as her witch counterpart Glinda.
On February 11, 2024, the first Wicked teaser was released through prime Super Bowl 2024 placement. The 60-second clip gives an interesting impression of the sound and the scenes of the movie, containing dynamic shots of the action and high, wide angles, corresponded with even more ‘Defying Gravity’. In addition to the teasers, we have seen a few promotional posters for the first Wicked film, one of which features Grande and Erivo striking the famous posture from the original Broadway poster.
What to Expect from Wicked the Film Adaptation
1. A Line-Up of A-List Stars
The movie makes a promise towards enticing performances by Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and ariana Grande as Glinda. Both of Erivos fierce vocals and raw emotions greatly coupled with Grande’s prettiness and voice are expected to revamp those characters who are loved by many.
2. The Stewardship Of Jon M. Chu.
The film has been entrusted to Jon M Chu of Crazy Rich Asians fame. The approach in this film is expected to be storytelling in images or pictures while at the same time integrating dance and motion.
3. Spectacular Dance Sequences.

4. Broadening The Scope Of Oz
The picture explores the origins of Glinda and Elphaba, their friendship and the enmity that ensues. A fully fleshed out story is expected that provides an additional angle to the narrative of the Wonderful Land of Oz, preceding the tale of The Wizard of Oz.
5. The Release Date
Jon M. Chu himself declared on July 1, 2024, that the first Wicked film’s release date has been accelerated, with the final official premiere scheduled for November 22, 2024.
